Most music producers by now are using, or at least are familiar with, social networking/media sites like MySpace, Facebook, Hi5, Flickr, Wikipedia. New sites and niche networks seem to be emerging weekly if not daily, and keeping up with it often takes more time than a "spending the entire night in a pre-production studio waiting for your big break." So, in case you missed them...here are some great social media sites you should check out and be active on if you-re not yet:

Twitter

Twitter is a micro-blogging site that does one thing, and does it well: asks you to answer the question "What are you doing right now" in less than 140 characters. People who subscribe to your "tweets" then get those updates delivered to their computer, their IM, or their phone. It's very addictive once you get into it, and it has several great uses: it lets you keep in touch with artists - who, usually, you only see at recording - and be a part of their daily lives; it lets you keep in touch with your fans, and lets them be a part of your life; it can help build your brand almost instantly & It's much easier to stay current with than a blog; your fan base will feel more connected to you, like they are interacting directly with you; text message tweets to your entire list from your phone, so when you are in the studio you can easily send updates to numerous people without a computer or an Internet connection.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a social networking site focusing on the professional world. Its purpose is to allow registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know and trust in business. These connections can then be used to get an introduction to someone you would like to know through a mutual, trusted contact; find jobs and business opportunities, list jobs and search for job candidates, and keep in touch with business contacts. While MySpace and Facebook often focus on pictures, videos, graphics, and of course comments, LinkedIn keeps it focus business like. As a music producer, this is an outstanding way to create and maintain a professional profile, and when dealing with other businesses, that can be a distinct advantage. You will find lots of music executives on LinkedIn where you can build relationships with them.

Beatbuggy

Beatbuggy is not that new. I am just, well, sort of slow in discovering some of these sites. Beatbuggy is like a Facebook for music producers. The wide range of features allows for fans to discover your beats and instrumentals. Every music beat you post is not only discovered by your existing fans, but has prominent features for spreading from fans to their friends based on who is most musically compatible or most likely to like your music style. This makes it easy to share amongst existing fans plus gives you exposure to potential fans that may enjoy and buy your tracks. A really cool feature of Beatbuggy is its review system. The goal is for members to vote on tracks based exclusively on how it sounds. When a beat is reviewed, you don't know what the member looks like, or his or her name. Afterward, your review is reviewed by an unknown member to make sure your being fair about your review. This approach removes bias and makes the music charts more decisive. On other music sites anyone including the person uploading the track can vote as many times as they want too. Many of the tracks move up the charts by the way of popularity and friendship votes.

As with all sites - and with all of life - you will tend to get out of it what you put into it. In any case you should have a profile on each, and even if you can only afford to update each site occasionally you may reap significant benefits.
